According to Tagle: “Uplift/Heavy Lift is an apt theme for this year’s juried show at Berkeley Art Center. In this year like no other, all of us have needed to shift, bend, and transform every aspect of our daily lives and creative practices as actual strategies of survival. While some of us have experienced the deepest losses of loved ones, job insecurity, and houselessness, and others of us have been relatively protected, none of us remain unscathed by the past year of COVID-19, wildfires, and racial injustice.”

The ceramic series Entonces ¿Que? [So What Now?] has provided solace and ambition throughout its multiple stages of life, acting primarily as an evergoing and never quite finished process-based work that has started with drawing based on aspects of collaboration with environment, self, and relationships. The sculptures resonate with feelings of nostalgia, tension, and balance. These ceramic works offer the audience the opportunity of open interpretation, guided by an intentional metaphoric symbiosis of each sculpture seen in every distinct base, union, and tension.

Memory in these pieces is highlighted through an emphasis of intentional marking through the artist’s hand and reference to the sculpture’s past life as a drawing or painting. Entonces ¿Qué? Represents the constant intrigues of both past and future in a consistent wondering, and an uneasiness with the present.

While the sound is continual and can exist longer than twenty-five minutes, the performative aspect suggests a narrative. Here I touch on the idea of home, as nostalgic, how can we preserve this childlike memory of what a home is, what comfort is. I present the creation of this space, not in an aggressive manner but one that comes from within, this, in fact, can relate to maturity, here the performance draws for space from what we intend is comfortable but in fact can require ourselves to eject and create a refuge. The fabric as to signify childlike attributes, something to hold onto.

the process included the artist watching every candle extinguish over the process of six hours in a small dark studio, whereby the original footage is fast-forwarded into 18 seconds, highlighting the process of ephemera.

selected pages from collaborative zine with artist Alex Ehmer

collective thought sets out to explore the union of two bay area multimedia artists. The zine studies the exploration creating new collaborative works reusing, reconstructing, and redefining shared thoughts, experiences, values, knowledge, etc. This zine investigates this solidarity within the sketches and writings from both artists unifying themselves when speaking on topics of trauma, anxiety, and metamorphosis. These similar ways of doing, creating, projecting, and acting help create the collages seen.
